my pick is Peaches, "Fuck the Pain Away."
I confess a soft spot for some James Taylor songs (Fire and Rain, especially) but few moments in pop make me cringe more than hearing him sing the lyric "churning urn of burning funk."
That clip got me thinking. You know, "Invisible Touch" is within striking distance of being a great song. Insanely catchy, nice imagery, almost-good lyrics. They nearly cancel out the deeply horrible arrangement and production. If someone like Jackie Wilson had recorded it instead of Phil & co., I think we wouldn't be laughing at it at all.
Phil Collins was obsessed with soul records, for sure. He remade "You Can't Hurry Love" on one of his solo albums, and lifted "Hot Fun In The Summertime" for "Misunderstanding". But I'm not sure which great lyrics you're hearing, however lost in miserable production they might be.
And as for Jackie Wilson, isn't he known for having suffered some bad arrangements himself?
