Haircut One Hundred, minus ninety-nine

Friends, I've buzzed my own hair down to half an inch, every two months, for the past thirteen years. Haven't paid for a haircut since the first pass through Baltimore.

My bro is getting married next week and I don't want to buzz it right now. I want to go to a pro.

I do not need to have a haircut. I just need a haircut. Tidy up the back and around the ears, and retain a little of the natural curl on top, I guess. I'll trust their taste in making me look neater, but I don't want the stylist's stylishness to overwhelm my appearance.

In this day and age, do I need a barber? A stylist? Will Supercuts do, or is that an accident waiting to happen? If I need a real stylist, can I make this happen by Sunday afternoon? Can hair appointments be made that quickly? I honestly have no idea. What the hell does a haircut cost in 2008?

If you've seen my new roommate, you know he's no help. Actually neither of the last two would be any help.

Please advise! Thanks.

ok, now on to your dilemma.
1. to have just a bit of style, like curl on top, i recommend a stylist. guy and i both go to stylists we love and trust.
2. yes supercuts is a bad idea. i have always regretted it, and so have guys i've known.
3. stylist haircuts for guys are around $45-$55. that's how much guy pays for his lady. it would not be out of the question to hear of a $65-$75 haircut either.
4. no, you cannot usually get an appointment this quickly, but i would recommend calling spunk salon or hair candy. these are shops owned by my stylist and guy's, respectively. since they have multiple stylists on hand, it will be easier to get an appt. on short notice.

Ok, well I am no hair expert, considering I get my hair cut about 3 or 4 times a year, and I'm technically "supposed" to be cutting it every 6 weeks. However, I have some words about the subject.

From hearing of others' experiences, I'd stay away from Supercuts.

Women's haircuts tend to be $60 on up, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't get a decent haircut in the $40 range. I tend to just look at yelp and see what other people say, and sift through what I can relate with, and take the rest with a grain of salt. Some may be able to fit you in before the weekend, but a lot may not. You'll probably have luck with weekday, daytime hours though.

Sorry, that's probably more than you ever wanted to hear about haircuts.

i go to Kristen's former stylist, Addy. (she opted for someone new after many years.) i go to Addy because Kristen did, and when she moved on i saw no reason to change.

Addy is a good guy, on the phone and as far as hair's concerned. he'll charge $35, and that'll include a shampoo by Jackie or Amy, semi-attractive hair pros themselves.

it's not cheap, but it's a quality cut.

have you walked by any of the places on Geary? there's an old-school guy near the produce market at 20th.

I've seen the old-school guy. I guess that's what I meant by "barber," and honestly I have no idea what kind of haircut you get if you go to a barber these days.

I've gone to Supercuts on Irving for several years, but only with one cutter: Meriam. I wouldn't trust anyone else there.

Thanks to everyone! I'll make some calls and see what I can whip up.

Go to the old-school barber. No appointment necessary and you don't have to go to a "stylist" on top of it.

I'm a little worried about this wanting to "retain the natural curl" stuff...

Jeez. I confess thirteen years of cutting it myself over newspaper on the bathroom floor, and all of a sudden you're worried that I'm going metro?

Kidding, of course. But it's for a special occasion and I'd like to avoid looking like a freshly-shorn Marine, that's all.

(Nobody tell Matt about my periodic use of hair product, OK?)

The aforementioned bro here... if you want to wait till you're in New York, I can direct you to several friendly barbershops that'll give you a decent cut for under $20.
