Jam session

Here's Duke Ellington and his Orchestra performing "C-Jam Blues." It has to be from sometime between 1940 and 1946, after the arrival of Ben Webster and before the death of Tricky Sam Nanton. The bassist looks too fat to be Jimmy Blanton so I'm guessing it's after Blanton croaked in mid-1942. Enjoy.

[UPDATE: Wikipedia and IMDB both say 1942.]

This is great stuff. Thanks for finding it.

I checked out the IMDB credits of the guy listed as director, Josef Berne, and found he not only did an early "music video" of Spade Cooley's wonderful "Shame on You" and other songs from the 40s, but filmed "Heavenly Music" in which bandleader Ted Barry dies, goes to heaven and is judged by a panel of musicians including Beethoven, Wagner, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Sounds corny, but I'd pay to rent it.
